I think if you wanna have something in focus (the belly button) while having typed dialogue you should try to make the text easier to see. Make it bold and give it an outline, maybe. Also, make the text change more slowly. Give people enough time to read it maybe 3 or 4 times over before you change what he’s saying. Especially because of the strong intended focus on the belly button, I had a hard time paying attention for both at the same time.
